How to Lose Friends & Alienate People – Review

I was at a screening of How to Lose Friends & Alienate People last week, because I’m just that special. Good movie, bad title… The cast was the temptation of seeing the movie for me, Sidney Young, Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox, Gillian Anderson, Megan Fox, Jeff Bridges, Denis Quaid, and Megan Fox. Basically, Simon Pegg’s character (Sidney Young) runs a magazine in the UK, where he starts controversy for a laugh. He receives a call from Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges) asking him to come work for his magazine. The magazine is more or less a celebrity ass-kissing-fest. He meets his coworker Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst) and although they are off to a rocky start, there is chemistry. He is determined to “shake things up” as he says, of course he finds trouble along the way. Eventually he meets Sophie Maes (Megan Fox) who is the hot bombshell bimbo that he quickly falls for. I won’t spoil anything, but the story becomes him choosing the path of which he either sells out, or lives by the beat of his own drum. The picture is slated to come out October 3rd of 2008. I would recommend it to just about everyone, except small children. Hopefully, by the time the movie is released, the title will be different though, because…damn. The story is based on a true story, memoirs of Tody Young. Perhaps something was lost in the conversion of memoir to movie. Either way, if you have nothing to do in October, go see it. Megan Fox is in it and she’s hot.

Skullcandy Titan Ear Buds

Of course I couldn’t get some new gear without telling everyone what I thought about it – I like these for the most part, with some minor grievances as anyone who knows me would expect. So, my Shures (E2C) that I had purchased only last year somewhat died on me. They were supposed to be good too. I walked in to Circuit City and found these on the shelf. There wasn’t much of a selection, but I wasn’t going to grab these out of desperation. I googled them, they had pretty good feedback, so I nabbed them.

You know, they’re comfortable and sound pretty good. Amazingly, I have gotten so used to the E2Cs, that I can tell the difference. These are more bass-y, which means of course in small ear buds like these, the higher frequencies are neglected somewhat. The bass being more driven makes for louder-seeming music (or whatever you’re listening to). Although the Shures provide somewhat of a more balanced listening experience, they didn’t handle bass well at all and I find that I don’t miss it.

If these ear buds last, they will be a pretty good buy. Plus they came with a cool little case and it, as well as the ear buds, have skulls on them. I could have used bigger “R” and “L” lettering on each of them though. It’s not easy to find and takes longer than it should each time. Another big plus is that they work out of the box with the iPhone (first gen). These things cost me fifty bones, so if they aren’t working by this time next year, I’ll be complaining… a lot.

Happy Birthday Garfield!

A little-known fact about me is I’m a huge Garfield fan. I own many of the comics (in book form) and watched the show religiously. If you don’t believe me, I can rattle a few facts out off the top of my head. He loves lasagna, has a teddy bear named “Pooky,” hates Mondays, and February for that matter. Anyway, Garfield is 30 today! I bet some of you don’t remember what Garfield used to look like and how much he changed. Below is the first Garfield comic.

No, not the funniest, but hey, it was a good start obviously. Garfield always teetered on the border of youth and adult humor. I always found that pretty unique. I’ll leave you with what maybe my favorite Garfield comic. I wonder if he’ll be around for another 30 years…

Ric “The Model” Martel

For some reason, I feel the need to throw praise to Ric Martel. When he was “Model,” it was by far one of the best gimmicks ever. “The Model” was a bad guy, so he was a villain, but a model. Since villains lie, he suited himself with a button stating, “Yes, I Am a Model.” Sometimes, coming to the ring, he would be modeling some kind of fashion. Back in those days, wrestlers usually needed two jobs. They were a wrestler, but also something else (barber, real estate, officer of the law, etc…). Being a model enabled him to dress up as yet something else, modeling, while also wrestling (such as a tennis player). Another great addition to this package was that he had apparently invented a cologne. Again, because he was a bad guy, the cologne was described as “foul smelling.” He called it, “Arrogance.” To be old school and manly, he had it in an old fashioned spray can. Of course the real use of this foul smelling cologne was for him to bring to the ring and use against his opponent(s) at some point if need be. It became the cornerstone of the feud between he and Jake Roberts in the early nineties, when he sprayed Jake in the face with it, blinding him in one eye. A great part of the business back then were promos that the wrestlers would film. Ric Martel had several commercials for his cologne as his promos. The below was absolutely one of my favorites.

First of all, the beginning is gold. He apparently defeats his opponent and is ready with the taunting word, “practice.” I neglected to mention that he is from Quebec, which explains the accent. His theme music playing in the background, along with the handwritten name of the cologne is classic. Finally, he remarks about finding yourself, “in the royal box.” Wow, now there is a joke I’m sure went over most youngster’s heads. Delicious pun! Oh man, how we need wrestling to somehow fix itself so it can be more like this again.

Creative Munchies

I was standing in my kitchen at about 4 AM needed to indulge my sweet tooth for some reason or other and this is what I came up with:

Yes, that is simply a spoon full of vanilla frosting with chocolate chips stuck in it, a true masterpiece!

The Rosa’s Chicken Sandwich

I felt the importance of sharing the knowledge of the Rosa’s chicken sandwich with you people today. It also can be referred to as the “chicken bun” or “chicken panini.” Words do not do this masterpiece justice. It’s chicken, either grilled or breaded, with melted mozzarella on it, a tomato, and some kind of special ranch-like sauce. Oh yeah, the bun is made of pizza dough. This thing is serious.

One of my favorite things to do is ask for a side of tomato sauce and dip this delicious mouth-watering sandwich in it. Not only is this thing filling and tasty, it’s only $4.50!! I would like to tell you all that Rosa’s is also a great Pizzeria and has great pasta dishes as well. There are three Rosa’s around these parts, this particular one is located at:

The Birthday Massacre

So sue me, I took the month off. Anyway, I had to talk about these guys eventually, they’re the band of the week!

The original name of the group was “Imagica.” Apparently the name bore a resemblance to another band’s name was switch switched to “The Birthday Massacre in 2000.” “The Birthday Massacre” in 2000. After enough demos were floating around, the band dropped their self-released album in 2002, Nothing and Nowhere. It was in 2005 that Violet would be released in the U.S. and Canada (having been put out by some indie labels here and there already). This album would see the re-release of updated tracks previously found on their demos. With the newer polished works and developing fan base, they geared up for a few tours, and after they were finished, they released their most recent album, Walking With Strangers. This album is good my friends, very good. As I told the lead singer in person (Chibi), it’s the first album that I listen to start to finish on a regular basis, since Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

As far as I can tell, they are definitely rising in popularity. I love to be the one to say “I told you so.” It just so happens that today, yes today, they are releasing an EP for their single Looking Glass. It’s available already on iTunes (I know because I bought it) and will be available in the Zune Marketplace and probably Snocap by the end of the day. If you want a physical copy of the album, it is also available on Amazon.com. As for a sample of their work, you can view the music video for Looking Glass below. Enjoy!

Chernobyl – A Look Back

In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (located in the Soviet Union) had a massive melt-down. It was tragic, blah blah…

Nine years ago today, however, myself and many of my friends had our own Chernobyl, if you will. At exactly midnight on April 26, 1999, my computer froze. I thought nothing of it as this was common with Windows 98. I hit the button and off we were with a reboot…or were we? The system booted into a error message that simply read, “Windows Not Found.” I had only had this computer for a year, but all was lost. In a panic, I quickly picked up the phone to call Alex. I heard panic in his voice as well almost immediately. “Dude, I can’t talk now, my computer froze and won’t boot into Windows.” I called my mom the next morning to warn her of this plague. She booted her machine and the same result happened. If only I had known keeping the computer off would have prevented this… I was so emotionally scarred and violated, I took the day off from school. Alex called me to tell me that it had hit a bunch of people at his school. The dreaded Chernobyl virus (A.K.A. “CIH”) had taken hold. By far, this was the most vicious virus I had ever dealt with and still is to date. The following year or two, in memoriam, my friends and I would not allow our computers to see the light of day on April 26.

Time has passed and the smoke has cleared, but I know that I will never forget. This world can be cruel sometimes.
